The Holtville High School Lady Bulldogs were right where they expected to be Friday afternoon: Ticket to Troy punched and a chance to win another area championship. After an afternoon of waiting, the second part was accomplished with a second win over Tallassee, this time in the Area 6 finale. Both ToniBeth Garner and Dani Oates made appearances on the mound in the victory.
The No. 6 Lady Bulldogs ran the table in area play and, after drawing a first-round bye, dropped Tallassee into the knockout round with an 11-1 victory Thursday afternoon.
Holtville defeated Elmore County 4-0 in the championship semfinal Thursday night to punch their ticket to Troy.
Tallassee punched its ticket to Troy and a rematch with Holtville Thursday afternoon with wins over Dallas County and Elmore County.
In the first game, Holtville’s Dani Oates picked up the win as the Lady Bulldogs pushed ahead 7-0 to start the game.
Hannah Ray slapped the rally into motion as she, Kendall Cox, Chontanae Combs, Oates, ToniBeth Garner, McKenzie Logan and Cameron Wilson all came around to score.
Holtville added two more in the second, Combs and Garner scored to put the Lady Bulldogs up 9-0.
Tallassee pushed a run home in the third. The Lady Bulldogs added two more to the tally in the top of the third. Marilyn Norris reached on an error and allowed Brooke Ward to score.
Tallassee loaded the bases in the fourth but had no way to push them home as Holtville picked up the win.
In the night cap, Garner rendered the Tallassee bats futile, striking out nine in the win.
The Lady Tigers are no stranger to the postseason. Last spring, Holtville went down to Troy and left with a trip to the state championship tournament ending the year third in the state. This is Tallassee’s first trip. In the South Central Regional Tournament in Troy the winner of the Area 6 tournament will face Dadeville, the loser gets Beauregard in the first round.
