FRIDAY NIGHT RECAP: Wildcats cruise past Evangel Chr.

Published 4:54pm Wednesday, September 4, 2013

Edgewood quarterback Taylor Hawthorne rushed for 127 yards on 15 carries and three touchdowns, and that was about 100 yards too many as far as Wildcats coach Bobby Carr is concerned.
Edgewood (2-0) extended its winning streak to 33 games dating back to 2010 in a 49-18 victory at Evangel Christian in Montgomery Friday night.
While his top-ranked Wildcats came away with a win, Carr was more critical of his team’s overall play.
“Edgewood is overrated as of right now,” Carr said. “People have got to realize what is in the past is in the past. We’re going to get to work on Monday to correct our mistakes.”
Hawthorne had touchdown runs of 16, 7 and 3 yards.
“Taylor got most of his yardage running for his life,” Carr said. “Luckily he’s a very athletic player and managed to avoid would-be tacklers.”
Hawthorne also completed 13 of 26 passes for 260 yards and one touchdown.
The senior quarterback found Josh Crawford for a 64-yard strike. Crawford also topped the century mark on the ground in back to back weeks with 103 yards on 16 carries. He rushed for three touchdowns on runs of 2, 1 and 2 yards.
Edgewood led Evangel 28-6 at the half and poured it on in the second half to ease to victory.
“We were lucky we made all the mistakes we did tonight and still came away with a victory,” Carr added. “We can’t afford to make the same mistakes down the road.”
Keith Johnson led the Wildcats with 14 total tackles while limiting Evangel to just over 100 yards of total offense.
Edgewood returns to region action next Friday to face Springwood at Storrs Field.
