‘Blithe Spirit’ to open at Depot TheatrePublished 9:05am Wednesday, September 25, 2013
“Blithe Spirit,” the comedic smash hit of London and Broadway, will begin its run on the Wetumpka Depot Theatre stage next week.
“Halloween decorations are already in the stores, so not to be outdone the Wetumpka Depot Players are conjuring up a deliciously spooky comedy,” said Kristy Meanor, WDP executive director.
In the 1941 classic by Noel Coward, a fussy novelist invites an eccentric medium to his home to conduct a séance. There Charles Condomine hopes to gather material for his next book and expose Madame Arcati as a fraud.
Also attendant at the country house party are Charles’ second wife Ruth, Edith, the skeptical Dr. Bradman and Bradman’s eager-to-believe wife, Violet.
Condomine’s scheme backfires when Madame accidentally summons Charles’ annoying and tempermental first wife Elvira back from the beyond. The ghostly Elvira makes continual attempts to disrupt his marriage to his second wife, who cannot see or hear her.
“Love and marriage devolve into laughter and mayhem when Ruth is accidentally killed and united with Elvira on the other side,” said Meanor. “Together the paranormal pair of blithe spirits haunt their hapless husband with laughable consequences.”
The production is directed by William Harper. Show dates are Sept. 26-28, Oct. 3-5 and Oct. 10-12 at 7:30 p.m.; and Oct. 6 at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door and online. For tickets or info, visit www.wetumpkadepot.com, call 334-868-1440, email firstname.lastname@example.org or find the Wetumpka Depot Players on Facebook.
