Statue taken from Catholic churchPublished 9:42am Monday, January 13, 2014
When Father Albert Kelley pulled into the drive of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Elmore Jan. 2 he thought something was a little out of the ordinary.
The church’s 3-foot statue of Lady Guadalupe, which is the image of the Virgin Mary, was missing.
Kelley filed an incident report with the Elmore County Sheriff’s Department and it was found less than a mile away from the church on the deck of a home last Friday.
“The person who lived at the home didn’t know how it got there,” Kelley said. “But I know it wasn’t easy to take since it was glued down.”
The statue, which will cost as much as $700 to replace, was damaged and cannot be repaired, Kelley said.
This is not the first time the church has been a victim of vandalism, but it was the first time the statue had been taken from the church.
“We have had stained glass windows broken out, but nothing like this,” Kelley said.
