Every week of the high school sports season, there will be a poll to honor the Elmore County area’s top athlete with the Wetumpka Herald Fan’s Choice Player of the Week.

Voting begins early in the week and closes Friday morning on thewetumpkaherald.com/sports. The winner will be honored in the web sections of the Herald.

The poll nominations rely on stats from coaches each week. If stats are not provided, players may often get overlooked.

This week’s nominees are:

Connor Pike, football

School: Elmore County

Last week: There was no question about the tone Connor Pike was trying to set in a rivalry win over Holtville last Friday. From the first defensive play of the game, Pike was flying all over the field breaking up passes or sacking the quarterback. He finished the 28-21 win with five total tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack and helped the Panthers shut out Holtville in the second half for the win.

Arthur McQueen, football

School: Stanhope Elmore

Last week: McQueen has become a mainstay on this list, and rightfully so. The junior running back is nearing 2000 offensive yards on the season and seems to find the end zone at ease every single week. Last week was no different as he scored three touchdowns in a blowout win over Park Crossing at home. After two short touchdowns, he capped his night with a 24-yard score to cap the blowout.

Jamarion Thrasher, football

School: Wetumpka

Last week: Thrasher has added another layer to not only Wetumpka’s offense, but special teams as well since he came back from injury. Last week was no different as he helped spark the Indians to a 20-12 win over Sidney Lanier in region play. In the game, Thrasher handled the majority of the snaps at running back, but also took a few snaps with some trick plays. His biggest play came in the second quarter when he caught a 73-yard touchdown pass that saw him outrun the entire Lanier defense.
