Some might think giving back to their community entails providing large amounts of money to local organizations, or organizing fundraising events for many to participate in; however, giving back to your community can be much simpler.

Every month from March to September, Main Street Alexander City hosts Second Saturday Clean Ups to help keep the city clean while also giving back to local nonprofit organizations. To give back by Second Saturday Clean Ups, grab some friends to help clean up the downtown area. The group who picks up the most trash receives $500 to donate to a local nonprofit of their choice. The group who places second receives $300, and third place receives $200.

These events provide a great opportunity to give back to the community in various ways — not only would you help to make the city look better by cleaning up trash, you would also have the opportunity to help a local nonprofit organization.

The simplest act of community service helps in more ways than you might realize. Showing you care about your community through service benefits your neighbors, local business owners and local families, which ultimately benefits all citizens in a community.

Doing what you can to benefit your community creates a cycle that can improve quality of life for all citizens. Giving back to your community does not require a grand gesture. It can be as simple as picking up trash when you see it, shopping local, volunteering where you can, participating in local events or just becoming more involved.

So, take the upcoming Second Saturday Clean Up as an opportunity to give back to your community.
